Unit 2 The Olympic Games—Reading and Listening

Good morning/afternoon, everyone! I'm very glad to stand here to interpret my lesson. Today my topic is “The Olympic Games” (reading and listening part). I am going to introduce my lesson from the following aspects: the analysis of teaching material and students, teaching aims, teaching key points and different points, teaching and studying methods, teaching procedures and blackboard design.

Ⅰ. Analysis of the teaching material

First of all, let’s focus on the analysis of teaching material. This unit is about the history of Olympic games, for example, the origin of Olympic games, the mythology of Olympic games. The listening part is about interesting story about Olympic games and it can help students exclude the disruption of liaison.

Ⅱ. Analysis of the students

Then, I’d like to talk something about my students. They already have learned some basic listening skills, while the English liaison is a difficult point in listening and may disrupt their listening. Therefore, I will try my best to help them overcome the disruption of liaison.

Ⅲ. Analysis of the teaching aims

Based on the syllabus and the analysis of teaching material and students, I set the teaching aims as follows:

Knowledge aims:

1.Students will know a ancient Greek mythology about the Olympic games.

2.Students will master the pronunciation rule-liaison.

Ability aims:

1.Students can learn some listening tips to enhance their ability of acquiring and processing information by prediction and discussion.

2.Their listening and speaking ability will have a big improvement.

Emotional aims:

1.Students will be more curious about the Greek mythology and be more interested to western culture.

2.Students will have a deep understanding of the equal spirit of Olympic games.

Ⅳ. Analysis of the key and difficult points

According to the aims of three-dimension, the key point of this lesson is to get Students can know something about Greek mythology and enhance their capacity of generalization and get the main idea. And the difficult point is exclude the disruption liaison of in the process of listening.

Ⅴ. Analysis of teaching and studying methods

To help students achieve the teaching aims much easier, I will mainly use task-based teaching method, multimedia method and communicative teaching method and so on. For students, I will encourage them to learn to cooperate with their classmates to let them become the real host of the class.

Ⅵ. Analysis of the teaching procedures

Step 1 Warming up

My class will start with a song. I will organize them to listen a song about beautiful mythology and thus lead in Greek mythology: “Ok, who can tell me its name? Yes, it is Beautiful Mythology(美丽的神话). There are many old and beautiful mythology in ancient Greece. There were always gods and goddesses in the stories(mythology). Have you ever heard of Greek mythologies?In Greek mythologies,when people were in trouble,they always asked for help from gods and goddesses. Today we’ll read a story which has something to do with the Greek Goddess of Love.”In this way students’ interest will be aroused.

Step 2 Pre-listening

I will ask students to read the story of Atlanta and then finish the exercise 1 .After students have a basic understanding about the story ,They will be required to discuss the following questions (What will happen during the race between Hippomenes and Atlanta? Who do you think will win the race?)in pairs and finish the excercise3 to make a prediction.

The reading before listening can help students have a basic understanding about the love story and arouse their interest in listening.

Step 3While-listening

In this step, students will be required to listen the material for three times. The first and listening is extensive listening and the second and third listening is intensive listening. In the first time, they should find out the main idea according to the passage they read and material their hear. By doing this,their capacity of generalization will have a great improvement.

In the second time, I will give them some tips of listening including paying attention to the liaison and ask them to fill the following blank on the blackboard: Hippomenes was waiting when Altanta came out .She thought , “I______ this man ______!”So she said to her father, “Tell him ______The race ______today.”But Hippomenes said, “These are ______:She ______who ______than her!_______-let’s run!”After students finish this listening ,I will ask some students to give their answer and then I will know what kind of mistakes students will make .Then they will be asked to listen again to check their answer and required to pay attention to liaison and grammatical form and I will stop playing the tape in key words and ask students to repeat the key words they hear. I believe students can enhance their listening ability through this way.

Step 4 Post-listening

In this section, students will work in group of 3,and discuss the following question: Why did Atlanta make this rule? Maybe some students will give a romantic answer that she wanted to marry a man who was better and stronger than her ,giving a sense of safety. Maybe some students will think that she wanted everyone to know that women should be allowed to take part in the Olympic Games. At that time I will focus their attention on the spirit of the Olympic games-equal, which can deepen students’ understanding of the he Olympic games.

Step 5 summary & homework

At the end of the class, I will make an appeal like this: “Sometimes there are some unequal things in our life and we cannot enjoy our right. At that time we need courage like Atlanta. We should do something for others” and call students to learn the courage of Atlanta.

I will give them two tasks. One is to finish the listening part in workbook .The other is to find a interesting mythology about the Olympic games and share with us tomorrow.
